Famous Tartan Army magazine is unique in that it is written and produced by us the Scotland Supporters, otherwise, and probably better known as, The Tartan Army. Everything we feature is about The National Team. (there's no club football thank you very much as they get enough coverage as it is!)
The idea for the magazine came about after Scotland got humped 6-0 by Holland in the Amsterdam ArenA. That particular score line was a hard one to take for two reasons. Firstly we were optimistic about getting a result against them as we had beaten them 1-0 in Glasgow a few days earlier, and secondly the result meant that we didn’t qualify for the European Finals yet again.
Despite the huge disappointment, and we mean HUGE, the spirits of our fellow fans after full time was truly uplifting. We reckon no other support in the world could rally round as The Tartan Army did that evening in Amsterdam. Everybody was hurting, but by the end of the night, in the wee small hours, all you could here through the narrow streets of The Dam was the endless chorus of "Bonnie Scotland, Bonnie Scotland, We'll Support You Ever More, We'll Support You Ever More'. Then a few supporters jumped in the canals in an alternative way of 'drowning their sorrows'.
Also, what stood out that night was the friendliness between the two countries supporters, a mutual respect that meant there was no gloating from the Dutch fans even though their team had just destroyed us. Although we are in an 'army', friendship is definitely our motto!
And so as we headed home, and despite the disappointment, we all discussed how well the Tartan Army had supported their team and represented their beloved country yet again. It was then that we discussed how we should share our experiences about the impeccable behaviour of the Tartan Army. It was a certain 'John Tannock', to name the guy, who eventually uttered the now immortal words 'lets start a magazine'.
It then took some time for us to pull the magazine together and we would like to claim that we were like a fine wine waiting to mature, but the reality is that we just found it really hard!
But all the effort and hard work has been worth it as the response to the magazine has been overwhelming, and many have said that it has filled a gap in the football magazine world, and in fact their lives in general!
Recently we were highly commended at The Scottish Magazine of the year awards for 'Best New Magazine in Scotland' which was nice as we are after all just fans who had no previous experience in the magazine field. |
